The physics, in plain terms

An interior blind manages heat that has already entered the room through the glass. An external venetian intercepts most of that heat before it ever reaches the pane — on a large west-facing elevation, the difference in how a room actually feels by four in the afternoon is dramatic. It's the same logic European and high-end South African architects use to shade glass buildings, applied to a Bellville home.

From mid-afternoon, Bellville's summer sun sits low and fires almost horizontally under any eave — the geometry that makes west-facing glass the hard case across every suburb here, whether it's a Loevenstein view home or a De Tijger facade above the tree canopy. Wide aluminium slats (in the 60–90mm class), guided in side rails or cables, tilt and raise to answer that angle directly rather than just softening it from indoors.

Effectively always motorised

An exterior blind needs to protect itself, so external venetians are specified with motorisation and a wind-sensor auto-retract as standard — the system lowers itself before the day's heat builds and lifts clear before a Cape Doctor gust arrives. Powder-coated finishes are engineered for genuine weather exposure, not just a showroom sample.
